Definition of System Load

I'm searching for a definition of the `system load' which is - in the
Berkeley world - computed in the kernel or - maybe System V - computed
in `rwhod' or something like that.

Perhaps someone has done a look at the special part of BSD sources and can
describe how it is computed.

In my system (ISC 386/ix) the sysload varies from 0.30 (quiet system) to
aprox. 1.30 (heavily loaded system). Is that the range it should be?

Thanks for your help
Peter
