RTS monitoring for UPS shutdown

A few weeks ago there was a discussion on this newsgoup about sensing
the DCD and RTS lines for automatic shutdown.
Has anyone come to a viable solution, especially for the RTS line, which
seems to me the most difficult to sense ?
