rsh daemons acting funny

I have 2 386 Xenix 2.2.3 systems connected via CMC Ethernet boards.
Occassionally I've seen the following:
(1) rcp and rsh work from one of the systems but not from the other.
The rcp simply returns without copying anything and rsh hangs.
(2) Extra rsh daemon around (sometimes as defunct). Sometimes killing
this extra rshd restores the 2 systems into working condition.
(3) "<node name>: Connection refused".

I would appreciate help in explaining any of the above and ways
to avoid it. Thanks.
