Signals 1 and 2

When we starting using XENIX, our communication program
started catching signals 1 (SIGHUP - hangup) and 2
(SIGINT - interrupt). We developed the simple communication
program by opening the device file and using ioctl. We
communicate using Digiboard PCxE cards through local serial
connections and by using modems. Does anyone know what causes
these signals. Can at least signal 1 be safely ignored?
