Altos Xenix System questions

A friend has acquired an Altos 586-40 system and needs some help.  He
would like to get a software development package.  He also needs some
help with things like formatting floppies, etc.  (What are the correct
parameters for 'mkfs'?)

What's a good reference book for Altos Xenix?
