	Try looking for these manual pages:

		INIT(8)  - process control initialization
		GETTY(8) - set terminal modes
		TTYS(5)  - terminal initialization data

  These manual pages may not be in the same place but, They should
  explain the way the system uses the /etc/ttys file.  Some of the
  newer non-source UN*X systems that are comming out have very good
  explainations in ttys(5) and should explain what some of the
  characters mean.
