Unix Workstation Info?

A friend with no access to the net is planning to buy a
Unix workstation on which to do software development.  He
can't afford to make a mistake, so: can you make a recommen-
dation?  He likes the specs of the Callan, Charles River,
Cadmus, the Intel 286/310, the Motorola VME-10, and the Logical 
Micro 16032 machine.  But he needs to know about support,
documentation, and service quality, software developer discounts,
quality of debuggers and other development tools, etc.  
He says he's had terrible experience with a Fortune 32:16 
in a previous job.
