Having worked on one of the Unix emulators which runs under Vms, I
would like to offer a parable:

Defenders of Vms make much of logical names; indeed, try to
imagine VMS without them! However, to redirect via SYS$INPUT,
the translated value could be 63 characters long, maximum (at
least in VMS 3.n. I've been away from it for a while)
Since a VMS pathname can easily be 120+ characters, a user could
	end up S.O.L.

VMS is incoherent; Unix is coherent. If the software base appeals to
you, get VMS. I wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.
