In response to Scott Barman's question - Have you ever heard of UNIXtm
running on a ones-complement machine? - the answer is YES.  In fact,
it's available from AT&T Technologies.  It is the Version 7 release
of the UNIX Time-Sharing System for Sperry Series 1100 Systems.  It
runs on a ones-complement, word-addressable Sperry 1100 mainframe.
It's sort of a virtual machine on top of the standard Sperry operating
system. It's yours for $30K source release, no support, university
discounts.  I think this is still correct. I've spent the last few years
of my life developing the thing (before being divested).
