enhancements to script---really flame about ~ escapes

Gak!  How can anyone stand tilde escapes?  Yucko!

[On a more serious note...]

For ``mail'', ~ escapes are almost reasonable.  After all, it's
collecting input lines, not input characters.  But rlogin acts on one
character at a time.  Can't we do away with escapes that escape only
after you've hit RETURN?
