Asynchronous file i/o

We are running 4.2 on VAX 780. I need appropriate C-code that will allow a 
process to issue a file read/write command and not get blocked (and thereby
rescheduled for a later time). 'fcntl' seemed the right way to try it, but
it seems that it works only for ttys. Is there another way to do the same?
