Transparent Remote File Access

I would like to collect information on Un*x networks designed to provide
TRANSPARENT REMOTE FILE ACCESS to processes on machines on the net.
Examples are: Altos Worknet, Newcastle connection.  If you have other
names for me, or better yet leads for technical descriptions of these
or other networks, please MAIL to me; I will summarize given interest.

If this is a common question on the net, please be kind enough to send
the common answers along with the flames.
