Has anyone done this?

I realized the other day how often the terminal line is idle
while I type at 10 cps max or pause to read what is on the screen.

Has anyone considered a kind of software stat mux? For example,
I could be using my hypothetical multitasking micro as a terminal
while another task in the background did file transfer, like this:

	me ----------\ /----- shell
	             |-----[serial link]-----|
	ftpprog -----/ \----- ftpprog
	(kermit, etc)

I would get priority so that I wouldn't notice any degradation
in service. I know there are mux drivers but has anyone done this
with user-level code, you know, pseudo-ttys, etc?

Please mail your comments unless you feel it is of general interest.
