efficiency in troff coding

Does anyone know if, in coding nroff/troff conditionals, it is more
efficient to say, as -ms does, something like:

    .if \n(mo-11 .ds MO December

instead of the more obvious:

    .if \n(mo=12 .ds MO December

I am wondering if those of you with access to the code could tell me
if there is any advantage to one of these constructions over the
other, or if it is entirely a matter of choice.

Thanks.
