signals -- query

Does anybody know how 4.1BSD and 4.2BSD handle signals that are not
defined in <signal.h>?  Are they user-definable?

My problem is this:  I need a mechanism to pass signals between processes
for an application I'm writing, but I am not sure which signal(s) to use.
