best backup?

tape device.  They would both prefer to have a single backup per tape.  We
would rather have all the machines in the lab backup onto the same tape 
each night and change the tape in the morning, keeping a log of where the
particular backups we need can be found and in what order to mount the tapes
to recover files on some machine.

Has someone written this already?  It should be free -- I'll write it and 
release it otherwise.  Suggestions and pointers welcome.
