too many ()'s in ps and w - (nf)

We're running 2.8 on a 11/70. The problem is that too many processes
show up in ps and w as (). I thought the following would have fixed
it:
in sys1.c, unifdef ACCT the line that does the bcopy into
u_comm of the command line.
in user.h, unifdef ACCT the u_comm member.
But the resulting kernel still causes a lot of ()'s to show up.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this and what a
fix might be?
