Debug tool to print "C" statements from within executable

I have lost a tool I got off the net that took a source
file and inserted printf statements in the executable that
would allow printing the executing code and variables during
runtime.

I would appreciate any leads to an anonymous ftp source for
such a tool. Alas I don't remember its name either.
