C++ archives

My company is starting up a major development effort using C++. Thus
far, I have spent approximately 2 weeks toying with the language. I am
excited about it, but also concerned about jumping into a large scale
effort without more information. Has anyone out there done anything
big (> 10k lines) with it? How do the different compilers stack up
against each other? Is it really possible to debug effectively with
cfront, or is a native compiler (GNU, Oregon) essential? Has anyone
developed interfaces to NeWS or X11 toolkits? Should I reconsider
and go look at Objective C, Smalltalk, ...?

I am new to netnews, so these questions have probably been addressed
here already. Does anyone have an archive of the C++ newsgroup? I
would be grateful for a copy (my phone call or yours). In general, I
am interested in hearing from anyone who can enlighten me on any of
these or other aspects of working with the language.

Partisan responses are always welcome.

...I will try to come up with a snappy closing for my postings...
