too much defining

Here's the problem, hope someone can shed some light on the solution . . .

I am compiling a program that #includes a ton of header files
(X and OpenLook, if it makes any difference).
Partway through the pre-processing, cpp craps out and complains about:

<filename.h> <line number> too much defining

It spits this message out about 17 times and then says:

< filename.c> <line number> no space
Error code 1
$

The line numbers that it references in the .h files correspond to
ordinary #define's.

I am _stumped_. Help, please.
If you have any suggestions, please e-mail (or post, if you see fit).
