Well, folks, I don't now and never have run TeX, but I am an incurable packrat.
Here's a slightly edited dump of what I happened to have lying around on the
subject. Hope it helps!

I have ported the C version of TeX (and of course LaTeX) to my 3b1.

I have also generated a previewer based on Nelson Beebe's dvi drivers
and a texview program posted to the net a while back. This version of
the previewer uses either the pk, gf, or pxl format fonts and attempts
to substitute something reasonable when a particular font can't be found.
I currently only use the pk format (for obvious disk space reasons).
I have also ported the previewer to a Sun 3, but it needs a bit more
work before I would consider it usable and friendly.
The user can see approximately half of a page when using the UNIX/PC
version and an entire page when using the SUN version. Of course
commands exist to move the page around on the screen to view hidden
parts.

I imagine that a few (if not a lot) of those on the net with UNIX/PCs
would like a copy of this. The problem I have is that the C version
of TeX source, previewer source, etc consumes 7 Meg of disk space
(uncompressed) while the macros and 5 magnifications of the computer
modern font set (in pk format) takes another 4 Megs. The executable
of the previewer and virtex take about a half a Meg. I never got
an undump to work on the UNIX/PC so my call to tex or latex is simply
a shell script that calls virtex and loads the appropriate format file.

I am looking for suggestions on how to get this info into interested
party's hands. I don't really want to have to handle hundreds of floppies
from people and my only phone line into my machine is also my home voice
line (anyone want to donate another line :-) ). I think posting the
source and everything else necessary to make it work would be unworkable?.

I'll listen for suggestions for about a week before deciding how to
proceed. Please let me know what you think.....

Thanks,

I feel a responsibility to respond to pjh at hao, but uucp doesn't
seem to feel the same way. This netter saw a remark I made about
TeX on my 3b1:

Yes TeX lives on 3b1s! Dr. Edward L. Hepler did a port and offered
Common TeX and some drivers (plus a 3b1 previewer). It was too large
to post, so he requested that you send him 12 formatted floppies.

It has been a while since he made the offer; you should contact him
to see if he is still "in the business". (Maybe he's reading this
and can post a follow up, since at least one 3b1 user was unaware of
the offer.)

If you work with TeX and have a 3b1, I'd like to keep in touch. I'm
trying to decide if I should buy a NEC P6 24pin printer. (Since I can't
reach pjh, maybe someone else wants to start a TeX email correspondence :-).

I got the package from Ed, and I am willing to make it available via
anonymous ftp from "noether.sunysb.edu". Before I do that, I need to
know if anyone who uses UNIX PCs has arpanet access. Please
send me mail if you have arpanet access and would like TeX for the
3B1; or if you have an estimate that lots of other UNIX PC owners
have this.

In passing: the TeX port works nicely, the previewer is a bit
strange though. Probably because it tries to fit things on the
monitor which has a funny resolution, and it also tries to match
up fonts with the UNIX PC fonts.

No, the previewer does not use the UNIX PC fonts. There are fonts which
have been generated using metafont for the UNIX PC previewer package. The
base for the metafont generation was calculated from the 3b1 monitor specs. Some
of those look strange (compared to what they will look like coming from a
laser printer) due to the low bit density (bit pitch) of the 3b1 monitor.
It does substitute in a font of a different size if the required font size
is not present on the system....

Has anyone been able to to get this yet? I can't seem to find the
host "noether.sunysb.edu", and mail I sent to the address given above
got bounced back.

Anybody had better luck? Could someone send me the internet number
of "noether"?

Last February 21st, Mark Galassi posted a note saying he would
be willing to make TeX available to those with ftp access to
arpanet. Unfortunately, I cannot seem to find the net address
of the host "noether.sunysb.edu", and mail I sent to Mark
was bounced back to me. Does anyone know the net address for
noether, or have a better mail address for Mark? I would
appreciate any help, as we are quite anxious to get TeX up on
	our 3b1's! Thanks,

The internet number for noether.sunysb.edu is 129.49.4.4, but as far
as I know the sources are not there. I have also had problems
sending mail to Mark Galassi. So Mark, if you are out there,
add another vote for making TeX available!

I run TeXtures (Kellerman-Smith) on a Mac Plus, as well Ed Hepler's
port of TeX proper to the AT&T 3b1. I am wondering what the net's
experience has been with non Post Script (tm) laser printers off of
both these machines, specifically with printing TeX output. What would
be especially nice is a printer that can be driven by both the 3b1 as
well as the Mac Plus. (TeXtures prints ok on an Imagewriter I, so
clearly it's comfortable with QuickDraw).

There may not be sufficient interest on the net with this kind
of overlap, so please mail and I will summarize.

Any makers of non Post Script (tm) laser printers on the net
reading this?
