the 3b20 was sold as a standalone computer,
both as single and dual-processor machines.
we have just removed two from our computer center.

If you can get hold of a DEVTOOLS diskette (or whatever has now replaced
it), you should be able to plug in almost any ST506 drive. The limitation
on size seems to be a restriction on 1024 cylinders.

I have just replaced the 72 meg drives in one of my 400's with a pair of
190 meg maxtor drives - for a cost of about (does a quick currency
calculation) $3600. Because these drives have 1224 cylinders, I get about
140/142 meg per drive, coupled with much faster seek times.

	This sounds more like the MAILCHECK variable in the shell, either
	Bourne/C/or Korn shell should handle it. It's possible that the
	value changed between releases. To fix the problem, put the following
	line in your .profile (for Bourne or Korn Shell)

	MAILCHECK=600; export MAILCHECK

	and the shell will check for the existence of new mail every 600
	seconds, or 10 minutes. export the value if you expect to be doing
	a lot of subshell'ing, ie out of vi or su'ing, and the check will
	continue for your LOGNAME even in the subshells. If you change the
	value from 600 to 0, the shell checks between every command run, or
	for that matter, every time you hit return.

--> What's worse is that mailx doesn't use a pager any more,
-->despite the fact that I have
-->	PAGER=/usr/local/bin/less
-->in my environment! Should I put it into .mailrc as well?

	This was already answered, but along the same lines, I'm often
	suprised how many people don't know the full power of the .mailrc
	options. The .mailrc has the potential to customize mailx to be
	very specific on a per user basis. Such as these:

	set prompt="mailx> " askcc hold crt=22 toplines=100
	set sign="\tMy Name\n\tMy address\n"
	set Sign="\tMy Fullname\n\tMy Very Long address\n\tUUCP: sooner!dewey\n"
	set AKA="\tAnother name or path commonly used\n"

	Note the options can be set multiple per line.

	set prompt="mailx> "

	change the prompt to something a little better than '?' or '&'
			    askcc
	Ask after cntrl-D for a carbon copy address. I sometimes want
	to mail the message to myself on another machine.
				  hold
	Let the message in /usr/mail/LOGNAME until I put them somewhere,
	normally if you look at a message, it goes in $HOME/mbox automatically.
					crt=22
	This kinda goes with the PAGER setting, I like to keep the crt less
	than actual length in case the terminal I'm on can't handle wrapped
	lines properly.
						toplines=100
	I think toplines is normally 10 or so, and this doesn't get past
	some headers when you do a 'top' and normally you want to see the
	'top' of the contents, not just the header.

	set sign="\tMy Name\n\tMy address\n"

	This goes with the ~a escape, and the line is "printf'ed" in your
	message, it's like a quick .signature

	set Sign="\tMy Fullname\n\tMy Very Long address\n\tUUCP: sooner!dewey\n"

	Use ~A and this one is used instead.

	set AKA="\tAnother name or path commonly used\n"

	Use ~i AKA (or others )and you can multiple addresses defined.

	There's other such as "meto", "keep" etc not to mention aliases
	or mail folders, but I've already digressed enough. I'm sure there's
	others that I've never used, but would love to hear about. Again,
	sorry if this was way off the subject or too long winded, but
	I thought Pete (the orignal poster) might want to know some of the
	other stuff that can go into the .mailrc.

I believe Informix Software has [had?] a 3B20, and I've heard of
a few other commercial sites with them. A customer was trying to
get info on a 3B20, though, and getting info from an AT&T account
executive was an exercise in futility -- lead times of almost a
year. Clearly they don't want to sell them to the rest of the
world, but they will if they have to.
