kermit on IRIS

After our disk crashed here recently, we were required to upgrade to
SGI's release 3.6 of the operating system; otherwise the new disk they
installed would not work. This of course required that the complete
distribution tape be loaded onto our system (the tech's tape -- we
haven't gotten ours yet). We restored all our user files and
everything seems to work fine. Except kermit.

Our 3120 is pretty much stand-alone; there's no ethernet connection to
other machines. Our only means of transfering files to/from the IRIS
is through the company phone system using kermit. Without kermit we
have problems, and for some odd reason it crashes (segmentation
violation) whenever we try to send a file. It recieves files OK and
is apparently able to connect to other systems just fine. My hunch is
that we were given a corrupted source code file for kermit or our
kernel has somehow been damaged. It worked fine before!!

Yes, I've tried remakeing kermit and rebooting the IRIS. No luck.
No, I can't reinstall the system; we don't have the distribution tapes
yet.
Yes, I've called the hotline; every day for the last week, and, well,
you know what kind of people they typically put on hotline duty.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Responses from anyone using
kermit under release 3.6 would be particularly nice.
