ttytype problem

Hey ho....
I have a Vision terminal plugged into one of the serial ports
on the back of a 4D/25 with IRIX3.2.1. I have defined the TERM type
in /etc/ttytype appropriately; ie.
iris-ansi console
iris-ansi systty
visII ttyd1
?v50am ttyd2
?v50am ttyd3
etc....
All of the other entries are the ones which came with the system software.
"visII" works properly for rlogins and the terminfo file was copped from
a SUN's termcap file and transformed properly so I trust it.
The problem: upon login, it is apparent (from numerous tests) that
TERM and term are not being properly defined by the login process as
"visII". The .login fails because of this. This problem exists only for
the terminal on the serial port; the console and rlogins work fine.
Does anyone have any ideas?
I noticed in the man page login(1) that the TERM variable is not
specifically mentioned as being set by the login process during login;
this is contrary to the man page on the SUN which mentions it distinctly.
On the other hand, ttytype(6) *does* say that the login process determines
TERM using /etc/ttytype. ???
Thanks in advance,
