Yes, the image file format *is* basic in many ways, which is partly
why we have never officially documented it.  The SGI RGB file format
does not encode a lot of information necessary for serious image
processing, publishing, or visualization work.  We are currently
developing an officially supported image library, which will support
our own image format as well as other image formats.  Details about
features and availability are currently not available.
