The world and stringspace

What is the best way to map strings into world space ? Specifically, I
want to know where the end of a string lies in my world space. Once I know
that I can attach various world objects to it, like lines, arrows, and such.

The beginning of a string is easy, but where is the end ?

I generate my own modeling and viewing matrices, and I don't use
the ortho/perspective/rot/translate calls. I don't know if map2 and mapw
can handle this. I would rather just calculate the positions directly.

What is the standard practice for calculating this ?

Cheers!

dan.
