Mixing X/Motif and GL on the IRIS?

I'm interested in some information about X/Motif and GL on IRISes:

1. Can GL be used for graphics and Motif used for the user interface
   in the same application?
2. Does it work the same way as on the RS6000? On the RS6000 I use
   winopen() to open a window for GL graphics and then fire up the Motif
   based user interface. If it differs, how so?
3. If it is possible to mix Motif and GL on the IRIS, has this always been 
   the case?
