Yes, mwm is the motif window manager.

I believe you buy the motif system from SGI; it should be available
for your 3.3.x system.  If you have mwm on some other platform,
you can run it over the net to the Iris, just set DISPLAY on
the machine with mwm to point to the Iris.

I don't think I can help you there.  Does the app really insist
that you have mwm running, or will it deal with an alternative
ICCCM compliant window manager?  You can try running twm just
to see what happens.  Caution: under 3.3.x (and NeWS), running
an X window manager produces interesting effects.  Check out your
release notes.

If you've never done it before, try this: start an xterm.  Run
the window manager FROM THAT xterm.  Then, if you want to bring
the X wm down and get all your 4Sight back, you can kill the wm
from the xterm.  (While the X wm is up, you won't see your wshs.)

This is all clean and shiny in IRIX 4.0.
