The Advanced Computing Center for the Arts and Design (formerly the
Computer Graphics Research Group) and the Ohio Supercomputer Graphics
Project are pleased to announce the public release of apE, the animation
production Environment, version 1.1.

ACCAD/CGRG has been in existence for nearly 20 years, and under the
direction of Charles Csuri has been at the forefront of computer graphics
since its inception. Several years ago, CGRG released its software into
the public domain (scn_assmblr, twixt, etc). The Ohio Supercomputer
Graphics Project was formed in 1986 to address the visualization needs of
the newly formed Ohio Supercomputer Center. ACCAD and OSGP together have
ten computer graphics professionals working on software research and
development.

apE version 1.1 is aimed primarily at scientific users, and is more of a
promise of what's to come than a complete system. Consisting primarily of
tools for visualization in two dimensions (but not just for 2d data), it
is based on a data flow internal model and contains a graphical
programming system for manipulating pipelines. All tools run under
SUNVIEW.

apE version 2.0 (currently in development/test) will provide support for
NeXT, the X window system, and SUNVIEW. A much richer set of tools,
including volumetric rendering, surface (ray trace/polygonal) tools, and a
faster, more complete interconnection syntax will be supplemented by
source code availability (nominal fee ~$50). Contact Michelle Messenger
(michelle at rhett.osgp.osc.edu) for information or to join the apE mailing
list.

apE version 1.1 is available via anonymous ftp from oscsuna.osc.edu
(128.146.1.4) in the directory pub/apE.
