Serial Port Communication with 386i

I want to communicate between my 386i and a mainframe over RS-232. Does
anyone know of a good terminal emulator that I can use instead of tip? I
have alot of experience in the MS-DOS world, where there are many such
products, far better than tip.

On the MS-DOS side of the 386i, even under 4.0.1 serial port communication
is hopeless. When trying to transfer files this way, I feel lucky if the
system doesn't crash. It usually just freezes up in mid-transfer. Using
tip, I get much higher speed in terminal emulation, but file transfers
don't work. To transfer a binary file, I uuencode first and download -
but tip always loses part of the file.

What I would really like is a program with:
	- protected file transfers, binary and text
	- scripts.
