gfr at cobra.mitre.org (Glenn Roberts) says:

I've noticed the same, and at times, not only for root. I say at times,
because my user login passwd is longer than 8 chars, and i can't remember
how i managed that (e.g. set up account using SNAP first, then as root,
wipe out the passwd field in /etc/yppasswd, login, give myself new
password, ... and variations thereof) Accounts that I set up now with
passwd > 8 chars does not allow console login. (however, su and login
from ascii terminal via serial port still possible)

Can someone enlighten us.
