Ciprico SCSI/Exabyte problems with ALM-2 on Sun 4/280 under SunOS 4.0.1

We are trying to get an Exabyte running via the Ciprico SCSI board on a
Sun 4/280 with multiple Xylogics 753s and an ALM-2 serial board. On our
test machine which doesn't have the Xylogics 753s everything seems to work
fine. ON our production machine with many more disks, running the Exabyte
and 'cat /usr/dict/words' on a terminal causes the machine to die a
horrible death, usually in the ALM driver. Has anyone seen this or
related problems (I seem to remember hearing problems with the Ciprico SMD
interface and ALM-2s)?? Does anyone know what is going on here? We've
talked with Ciprico and played with the jumpers somewhat, but to no avail.
We are near the point of punting the Ciprico controller and using the Sun
SCSI board.
