Tar(1) somtimes hangs 1/4" tape drive

We had this problem when we went from 4.0 to 4.0.1; what i did was
to remove the patch labeled `scsi'

Our 1/4" tape isn't used a lot, so I guess it's possible that this
could be a red herring..
