Sun 7053 Disk Controller with Fujitsu 688 Meg Drive?

Has anybody seen this combination?  We've got one and are finding that the
Sun "features" tape to support the 7053 doesn't work
The major symptom is label read errors, giving me the impression that the
controller is not seeing the disk too clearly.

Any configuration hints?  Words of advice?  The system Sun OS 4.0.
