Questions about installing memory in 4/370 (1mb vs 4mb simms)

We're about to get on of our 4/260's upgraded to a 4/370. The resultant
machine will only have 8 mb of memory. The simple, easy answer is to go
off and buy sun's 24mb memory board, and bring us up to a comfortable
32mb. I was wondering if it was possible to remove the 1mb simms on the
4/370's motherboard, and replace them with 4mb simms and save a couple
kilobucks.

has anyone ever done this? is this feasible? Comments or suggestions for
alternative upgrade paths would be appreciated.

[Note: I'm assuming that there are only 8 simm slots on the 4/370, hence
4x8=32. I'd love to put more in, there should happen to be 16 slots.]
