[praise for cpio]

Afio is a cpio clone/enhancement that has saved my bacon on a couple of
occasions. It knows how to get past corrupt spots on an archive and
resynchronize itself, where many cpio implementations give up or even
crash.

It also has lots of tape-handling options, including one for doing multi-
volume backups on tape drives that don't generate proper notice for
end-of-tape.

Overall, I recommend it highly. It's available from UUNET and certainly
elsewhere.
