How to keep screen normal in GL

Hello,
I'm trying to learn gl, and there is one thing that is most
bothersome. When opening a new window with "winopen", the
palette of the entire screen changes to whatever is in
GL's palette. Is there a way to avoid this? I've tried
to read the current colormap before opening a window, but
that causes a coredump.
I've tried to find a list of 'sacred' map entries (i.e., those
that shoulnd't be screwed with) in info, but no luck.
I'd really like to have a 256-grayscale palette, but unless I
open the window to be the entire screen, the window manager (of
course) turns into the null and void.
anks,
rob
