You can launch A/UX from the Start A/UX application that appears when
you mount the CD on the desktop. Since it's read-only, there are
limits to what you can do, but you can run it.

I don't know the access speed of my Toshiba drive. A/UX execution was
noticeably slow, but not nearly as bad as I expected, running on the
drive only. 

By the way, the install process from my Toshiba drive takes about half
the time Apple quotes in the manual for installation from their drive.
The first confirmation I've gotten that this drive really is faster.
