Unlimited Merge/386

And when we left the "as the diskette turns" drama the suggested
"I don't know, try this and let me know if it works" had indeed
worked. Seriously, while I was not thrilled with uPort's suggestion
it was worth a try and it did, as I reported, work on my luggable
system, it remained to be seen if it would on the target system.

The good news is that I successfully installed unlimited users Merge/386
on the target system. The bad news is that I had to back up and reinstall
run time to do it. Make no mistake, I'm delighted that it worked and I'll
even forego smart remarks about having to do a low level format to make it
install. Since tech support admits that they don't understand either, I
suggest the following:

There is something either in limited Merge/386 or in unlimited run time
V/386 that keeps the unlimited Merge/386 kernel from working correctly.
It causes VM86_DIED traps and such and no DOS image can be made so no
dos process can run. If you put unlimited Merge/386 on top of *LIMITED*
run time you're home safe (I haven't tried any other terminals yet). You
will have to add group and other read-write permissions to /dev/dsk/dos
before you can use the DOS partition as drive E but that's a tiny hiss, no
big boo.

Now pray someone explain why I was told I had to buy both unlimited run
time upgrade (which might have broken everything) as well as unlimted
Merge since the former is obviously included with the latter? Oh, the
missing installation instructions for unlimited Merge/386 -

1)Make sure that you are running a limited run time system without Merge.
2)If that is not the case, back up and re-install limited run time only.
3)Follow the installation instructions for Merge but use the unlimited
  Merge diskettes.

That didn't hurt a bit did it :-) The opinions are only my own, Tolerant
is nice enough to let me use their equipment, don't blame me on them.
