restricting scope of find

I often want to do a "find" on only the top level of a directory without
searching through its subdirectories (for example, in the news directory
$SPOOLDIR I might want to find files modified before a certain date).
If I do a "find $SPOOLDIR -m +10 ..." it of course wants to search
every directory in the news hierarchy. Is there any way around this?

Thanks.
