Backup of a living file system

Is it possible/recommendable to take incremental backups of a living
filesystem? I suppose it's almost dead at 4 am (like me :-), but there
may be background jobs. Will activity in the filesystem result in
a dump containing a corrupt structure or just corrupt files ("just"
because users around at that time should blame themselves)?

We are running SunOS 4.0.3c on a sparcstation 1.

Thanks in advance,
