Scanning terminal input within curses (HOW???)

I'm looking for a function which will scan for terminal input (ie. key presses)
and return a result WHETHER OR NOT a key was pressed. If a key was pressed, I
need to be able to find out what that key was. The function must work with
curses, as the program I'm developing which requires this is a curses-based
program.

I've attempted to use the getch() and wgetch() routine with the _delay
variable set to various values (via timeout() and wtimeout()), but this
doesn't seem to work very well.

If anyone can shed some light on this problem, I'd very much appreciate it.
Please reply ONLY via e-mail. I will post a summary of the replies I receive.
