Defect Table

This morning, while re-booting an AT&T 3B2/400, I got an error message
stating "WARNING: hard disk: Cannot read defect map on board 0, drive 0".
And it did not mount one of my file systems from one of my hard drives.

After looking this up in my System's Adminstrator book, it tells me (page
C-8) that I have to have the defect table rebuilt. How do you do that?
What happens to the data on the disk when it is rebuilt??? I need help!

Thanks
