Building R4 Documentation from SunOS

I have System V release 4 source but I don't have the platform the
source is for. I'm trying to generate the documentation that comes
on the tape under SunOS4.1. I've built ucb troff and dpost, I'm printing
to a Laserwriter 2. The result is that headers, footers, section headings,
and a few other things come out ok, but the text of paragraphs is
messed up with overprinted characters and incorrect spacing.

I've checked the font files and they look ok. Only built-in fonts are
being used. I did discover that there are two slightly different
makedev.c's, one for troff and one for dpost. I've tried having both
troff and dpost share the same font files as well as each looking at
font files made by their respective makedevs. Both cannot share font
files made by dpost's makedev as it causes troff to dump core.

Any ideas?
