Shell command input redirection

Hi all. I'm not much of a shell programmer, and not a regular reader of this
group, but I find myself with a problem that seems to have me and many others
stumped but good! I'm hoping someone here can offer me some guidance...
What I'm doing is using a command in a script executed by csh -f -b that
looks something like this: command <<'END' >>&out I'm then giving some
commands to that interactive command (FTP in this case) and terminating that
interactive redirection with 'END'. So far so good, everything works. But
I would like to perform a few shell commands (which could work in FTP as a
! command sort of form) and then use the result of those commands to supply
*further* input to the FTP process (which I'd like to have left going and not
have to quit and then re-enter if possible) Can this be done? If so how??!
Either reply by e-mail or respond here, I'll remain joined to this newsgroup
for a day or two to check all responses. Thanks for any help someone can
offer!!
