Kernel Panic during compile; controller problem?

I'm having an error when compiling smail from source on my 386 running
ISC 2.2. Two different times I have gotten about 5 minutes
into making the binaries when I got a PANIC & DOUBLE PANIC.
Here is the screen, condensed a little:

PANIC Kernel mode trap type 0x0000000E

(then a bunch of numbers here, that I didn't copy down)

DOUBLE PANIC spl*: logic error in misc.s
Trying to dump 2048 pages; 2048 pages dumped

DEVICE ERROR: Adaptec 1542B2B .....Absolute sector (number)

---------------------------
There is no way to map bad sectors on a SCSI drive, right? The BIOS
on the controller is supposed to take care of that I thought. Am I
running into a bad section of disk every time?

Thanks in advance if you can give me some input on this.
