Ultrix 4.0 ifconfig trashes root again

Somewhere between Ultrix 3.0 and 3.1, something in the networking
or Ethernet driver causes ifconfig to trash our root disk. About a year
ago I posted about this problem, and also contacted DEC support. DEC
responded to both the phone and USENET posting (different people) both saying
they thought they reproduced the problem and would pursue it. Naturally I
never heard from them again. I got busy and just fell back on running 3.0.
We recently tried to upgrade to 4.0. We are running into the same
problem. Everything is fine until you start up the network with ifconfig
(either manually or under /etc/rc). The root fs gets trashed, starting with
inode 4096.
It happens both on a MVAX II and a MVAX III (actually a VS 3200).
Both have DEQNA's, 16Mb memory.
I sure hope this problem can be fixed since I don't want to run
3.0 forever... Please email responses. Thanks.
Cheers,
