SLIP problems between 3100 and 5810

I have setup SLIP between a 3100 and 5810 system. I am able
to 'rlogin' and 'telnet', etc. just fine, but after a short time
(varies between 10 seconds and 5 minutes), the session seems to hang.
This happens with both rlogin and telnet. 'ftp' also hangs.
Here is a dump of what I know and what I have tried:
After my session hangs, I can re-establish another session which will
eventually hang as well. Doing a netstat -i on both systems, I can
see the 'sl0' device. I notice that there is a small number of
both input and error packets.
After I exit a 'hung' session, the 'rlogind' (or 'telnetd') process
hangs around, but the 'csh' process is killed.
Since the documentation is pretty thin, most of what I have done is
via trial and error. I have a 'getty' process running on the port
on the slave machine in order for 'slip' to login. But, after it runs
/usr/new/slattach, the getty is still running on the port. I get
some syslog messages like: '/dev/tty01: mount device busy' -- I assume
that the getty process can't get access to the port and fails. So, I
set the status of the port to 'off' in /etc/ttys and restarted init
(kill -1 1). After this the messages in syslog stop, but I still get
hung sessions.
My configuration:
DEC 3100 Ultrix 3.1
|
/dev/tty00 (one of the serial ports)
|
async - sync converter
|
9600 baud sync modem
|
| (telco supplied sync circuit)
|
9600 baud sync modem
|
async - sync converter
|
/dev/tty01 (a port on a dmb - 8 port mux)
|
DEC 5810 Ultrix 4.0
Any clues ?
