Jay Lepreau gave me the key to the trailing lines:  Unix mailers (including
mine) append a blank line every time they are forwarded, including the large
number of hops on uucpnet and at the SRI machine.  Jeffrey Mogul also sent
at reply which vividly pointed out the gross proliferation of header lines
in these exchanges which significantly aggravates the problem.  I was wrong
in assuming that the sending mailer had added all the lines.  I had not
correlated the lines with the number of forwarding operations.  Sorry about
that.  It certainly does illustrate the value of programs (and systems)
doing exactly what they are asked to do. --Jerry
