I believe that the reason it is so slow on large directories is that it 
sorts the entries alphabetically.  It has irked me for some time that ls
doesn't have an option to not sort the listing.  Such an option would be useful
in cases where another program rather that a human is going to grovel over
each file.  This is homologous to the -p option of nlist.
